Microcurrent & LED Light Therapy: How Do They Work?
The Power of Microcurrent & Light Therapy | BrightAmos
Two of the most popular at-home skincare technologies today are microcurrent facial toning and LED light therapy. Read this blog to find out how they work.
In the past few years, many people have embraced at-home skincare technologies. Most of these are easy-to-use and portable versions of treatments often performed by professionals. Now, caring for your skin at home has become simpler, faster, and more convenient.
If you’re unsure where to start, two of the most popular at-home skincare technologies are microcurrent facial toning and LED light therapy. Both can address common skin concerns like premature aging, wrinkles, acne breakouts, and inflammation. But how do they work?
What Is Microcurrent Facial Toning and How Does It Work?
Microcurrent has been clinically used to accelerate wound healing and stimulate facial muscles. The FDA first approved the microcurrent technology to help patients with Bell’s palsy. Over time, researchers have found more uses, including facial toning for skincare.
A microcurrent facial toning device emits low-level electrical currents or pulsations to stimulate the muscles under your skin. The microcurrent mimics your body’s electrical impulses. It also increases skin cells’ adenosine triphosphate (ATP) content. In turn, it boosts your skin’s collagen and elastin production. If ATP content is high, your skin will look supple, plump, and smooth. That can happen when you use a microcurrent device consistently.
Best for: Lifting muscles of the face and neck, supporting skin health via the production of ATP.
Results after: An immediate lift can be seen in certain facial muscles, particularly the brows and cheeks but regular use is required for sustained results. Like exercising the muscles, it’s a commitment!
Time commitment: Depending on the tool and areas treated, 10-30 minutes, three to five times per week.
Pain level: None
What About LED Light Therapy? How Can It Be Effective?
Like microcurrent, LED light therapy has been used in medicine for several reasons. These include healing wounds and alleviating arthritis symptoms. In dermatology, LED light therapy is used to heal psoriatic lesions and scars, support tissue repair, and stimulate hair growth.
Over the years, LED light therapy has become popular as at-home skincare technology, too. Skin cells have receptors for LED, allowing lights to enter and stimulate collagen production. Plus, the skin responds to each different light wavelength or color. For instance, amber, red, infrared wavelengths can accelerate skin repair, reduce inflammation, and enhance cellular metabolism. All these can lead to the diminished appearance of wrinkles and other fine lines. On the other hand, blue lights can target acne breakouts without irritating or drying the skin.
Best for: Reinforcing collagen and elastin, brightening skin tone. One of our favorite ways to use red LED is after micro-needling, making it a natural pairing for helping skin to repair after collagen induction therapy (medical needling) - just be sure the red light is far enough from the face not to contaminate newly needled skin.
Time commitment: Normally 10-20 mins, ideally 6 to 7 days a week (depending on the device). LED is one of those modalities where frequency is important for optimum results.
Results after: Depending on the strength of the device, some report an immediate glow, however more profound changes to the epidermis begin to show after the first month and can continue to improve for several months.
Pain level: None
